Belongaben Farm
Why ‘Belongaben’?
Because it all belongs to Ben.....apparently.
Belongaben Pecans
You will find us in the beautiful Northern Rivers region of New South Wales. Our property "New Kunghurloo" sits on the Richmond River halfway between Casino and Lismore, on deep alluvial river flats that have been building here for thousands of years.
That soil is why this district grows what it does. Pecan trees need deep, well drained ground and plenty of warmth through summer, and the Richmond Valley gives them both. It is also one of the few places in Australia where you will find pecans, sugar cane, soybeans and hay coming off the same farm.
Australian pecans are grown in an industry that is free of pecan scab, the fungal disease that forces growers in the United States and South Africa onto season-long spray programmes. It is one of the reasons our nuts are different, and one of the reasons we take biosecurity on this farm seriously.

Nature Conservation
Farming Alongside Wildlife on the Richmond River
Food is not the only thing growing on our farm. We nurture an abundance of wildlife: in the corridor of forest along the river, in the patches of rainforest and paperbark, in the pecan orchard, and even in the sugar cane. Our large dam is habitat for waterbirds, fish and turtles.
With support from Lismore City Council we have planted extra feed trees for our resident koala population, who reward us with a few joeys every year.
A working farm and healthy habitat are not opposites here. The river corridor, the rainforest remnants and the orchard all sit inside the same fence line, and keeping them that way is part of the job. We believe that farming and looking after the environment go hand in hand.
Pecans, Soybeans, Hay and Sugar Cane
Pecans
We grow six varieties of pecans, each with its own size, texture and flavour. The orchard is harvested from autumn into winter, and the nuts are dried and cool stored quickly, because pecan quality starts dropping the moment the nut leaves the shuck. It is the difference you taste in a fresh Australian pecan against one that has spent months in a supply chain.
Soybeans
The soybeans are grown in rotation with sugar cane to improve soil texture and add nitrogen naturally. If we have a good season and they make “edible grade” they can be used for products such as soy milk, tofu and flour. If they are not quite up to scratch, they can still be used for stock feeds
Hay
We grow and bale our hay here on the fertile river flats of the Northern Rivers. We hold to strict standards for freshness, cleanliness and nutritional content, so when you buy Northern Rivers hay from Belongaben you know exactly what paddock it came from and when it was cut.
Sugar Cane
Our sugar cane is grown using sustainable farming practices and is certified internationally by Bonsucro. We are part of the last Australian farmer owned sugar milling co-operative, and our sugar is marketed by Sunshine Sugar. Every tonne that leaves this farm stays in Australian hands from the paddock to the packet.
